I recently sent a package to a member of this forum via UPS and I was required to show a Government issued photo ID to get the package accepted but requiring a person to show a picture ID to vote is some kind of an impediment to personal liberty. Go figure, I can't

Shortly after 9-11, UPS required us to open any package prior to their shipping. They, at that time, had to personally inspect heavy parcels before shipping. At the time, I figured it was a PITA, but also figured that was better than someone sending a bomb. this must have been a bigger PITA for UPS, since they don;t do that any more.

Seems showing a photo ID is a simple thing to do. However, what good does it do to know who sent a package after it has done something bad?

Yes, we all live with aggravations, but these are better than the alternative, now that we know some people are out to do damage to anyone.

I did exactly the same thing, with exactly the same result. But, and this is a big one, I am a veteran, and that is a group that bears some watching according to some in our Govt. That plus we are old guys, and shipping dangerous old saw stuff with out any way to stop the blade. What do you expect, we are a real threat. I could give you a few other similar "puzzelments", but I better quit before I get myself in trouble.

I do understand the need to be careful, but as you point out, there ought to be some common sense involved.

If ever you want to see the average Brit start foaming at the mouth, suggest that ID cards should be mandatory.

This could be a very interesting discussion. The problem with indulging is that it will also have a million tangent.

A photo ID being required to vote seems to me to be common sense. Only registered voters are allowed to vote. When someone shows up at the polling place without ID, that someone gets turned away. Totally common sense. Everyone needs a photo ID.

If you drive a car, you are supposed to have a license. Ahhh, a photo ID. If you serve in the military, you have a photo ID. If you are a student at a college, you likely have a photo ID. Some charge cards have a photo ID. My bank card is a photo ID.

How do you go through life without a photo ID?

It is sorta like paying taxes. Everybody pays taxes. It is one of two things that everyone does; pay taxes and die.

What is that you say? Less than 50% of those living in the USA pay taxes. How can that be? Taxes are taken right out of your pay check. If you get a pay check, the Government gets social security and federal income taxes right off the top. Are you saying that nearly half of us don't get a pay check? Ohhh, maybe half of us are working for employers who do not withhold social security and federal income taxes. Doesn't that make the employer federal criminal?

No photo ID, no vote.
Works for me.
If you want to be part of "the system" and vote, be ready to get in line for a photo ID at the same time.
As long as the ruling powers are willing to provide the ID, that is.

It seems that, now, the most Uncommon thing in the world is common sense. The only problem with having to have a photo ID to vote is that "Chicago Style" politics has a hard time working and we all know that the reigning regime can't have that.

The UPS drop off place here on the edge of civilization doesn't require an ID.
Neither does the liquor store, or where I buy ammo. In fact, a liquor store where I used to live (Coolidge, AZ) sold ammo and guns. You could buy a case of beer and a box of shells at the drive up window!:eek:
I really do wish that a photo ID was required to vote, though.
