Dado set

Im looking at a Dado Set but can not make up my mind on the 6" or the 8" set...Help...any thoughts...Thanks

'Common' opinion is that 6" is all you will ever need.
I did not know that when I purchased an 8" one.

6" is what shopsmith sells and should be fine. I have an 8" freud set and it works great, with the caveat that I have bogged down the standard headstock enough to trip the breaker a few times. Doesn't happen with the powerpro though.
On the deepest cut I am sure the standard dado insert would end up hitting the blade, but for most cuts you should be fine using the insert with either a 6" or 8" set.

The M5 dado insert is 7 1/2" long. I think the arbor will interfere first.

Like JPG, I bought an 8". I'll NEVER need that much cutting depth. A 6" would have been just fine.

I agree with all who said that they will never need the cutting depth of an 8 inch dado versus a 6 inch. However, there's one other consideration. At equal RPMs, the speed the teeth are moving at is faster on a 8 inch dado than on a 6 inch because of the larger diameter and thus larger circumference that must be traveled in the same amount of time. This may possibly lead to a smoother cut with the larger dado. Just a thought.

Im looking at the Ridgid Carbide Co. 6" for $139...I have ordered a 10" balde from them, it should be here next week...
