About WOOD

I was given a piece of wood today by a wood carving friend.
He said he could not remember what it's called but it was an island wood like teak
but not teak and it was great for turning and was good around water.

it measures 3" x 2 ¾" x 24"

any ideas what it is?

Hi dear am newbie here and today i want to say that i read this forum it's really nice and informative i really like it and i have a question about wood which is that I was wondering what type of wood you would use to make a soapbox car. My brother wants to make one.??

Try using balsa wood or pine for the soapbox car.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

Around this part of the woods they are often called a Pinewood Derby, or at least they were. My history with this subject is now pretty dated. I believe from memory that the wheels, axles, pine body were all provided as a starting point.

Might be a local name.

In cub scouts the boys have a pine wood derby. I did not have boys, so I don't know what was provided. The boys let them loose down a track. Soap box derby I think wheels were provided, but the difference is that the contestants ride in these. I have seen some very complex soap box racers. I am guessing any lightweight wood, but easy to shape as examples I remember were made aerodynamic in shape. I would suggest pine or maybe basswood.

I don't know which kind of racer the poster is after.
