Just started the breakdown/inspection of my 'new' '79 Mk V. I noticed right off that there was more endplay in the shaft than I liked, so I pulled the quill and removed the spindle knob, and-urk! the spindle is loose in the bearing. It would, I imagine, pull right out were there not some set-screw burrs around the upper flat.

So what next? Is there a home remedy, or is it time to look in the Yellow Pages for a machine shop?

(The bearing itself seems to be fine).

Would strongly recommend you upgrade to a two-bearing quill rather than spend the money/time on the fix. Even with the repairs needed, the single-bearing quill will have no less that .005" runout. In the two-bearing quill, this decreases to .001".

Thanks, Nick. I went ahead and ordered the twin-bearing quill. The old one probably has sried up anyway, and whatever trauma caused the problem (perhaps inadequately clamped when raised up to drill-press?) may have caused other problems.
