The other option is simply a piece of scrap added to the bottom of the table then clamp to that.

Shown below is the rip fence to control movement. You can also do this with the miter gauge or with both at the same time.

Next is a way to use the table insert to mount the vice.

I'm sure some of you are now thinking "hey I could make a special insert and use that" yes you can!

I'm thinking I could come up with another 10 ways but then I think some of you might like to go off and do that yourself, so have at it.

A great set of pictures that tell a very interesting and informative story. I think it shows that the vise is certainly useable on the 500 and in my opinion most suitable there.

There are times that the t-nuts and the Shopsmith vise cannot be located right where I want it (on the drill press table).

I simply drilled a couple holes in the table insert and I secure the vise using those. This is not near as elegant a solution as yours, Ed but it was the best I could come up with.

My inserts are made from 1/4" hard board and in the center section they are double thickness (1/2").

To give you an idea of the size of the vice mounting board I've shown:

You can go larger or smaller and while I add threaded inserts (3/8") you could use any number of other ways. I like to use plywood for this sort of thing but you can do as you wish with materials as well.
