toy finish question

Well, this isn't the typical "what's safe" question.

I want some wooden wheels (store-bought, unknown wood) to be dark. It would be nice if the woodgrain still showed up. What would be good? I'm thinking a walnut stain. I don't want to do any sanding on these and believe that's ok because they are very smooth.

Advice??

Go ahead and use a water based walnut stain. After dry they should be safe. It wouldn't hurt if you followed the dry stain with a polyurethane finish.

Usually those wheels are made from hard maple.
