The special adapter comes in this package. It says so right in the ad.

The Shopsmith special is a decent price for the G3 with two sets of jaws and the proper insert. I ordered a G3 last Sunday with a single set of jaws and a 1x8TPI adapter for about $127 with free shipping via Amazon because I had a a couple of Amazon gift cards. I also ordered a set of 45mm spigot jaws as well for holding long stock (like for holding pepper mills) unsupported by the tailstock and I see that Shopsmith's price on these is about what they cost elsewhere. Had I not ordered them just before the Shopsmith sale, I likely would have bought from them. I still need to buy the proper Shopsmith adapter, but not at Shopsmith's price of $52 since they're sold elsewhere for less than half that price.

Anyone know the "native" size/thread of the G3 chuck (without the adapter) in this Shopsmith package deal? Wondering if it is usable on other lathes.

I went ahead and ordered the Nova G3 chuck today from SS - the price seemed like a good deal and a substantial reduction over their normal price. I've never used a chuck with my lathe before but it seems like a great way to reduce the frustration that often comes with faceplates and associated screws, glue blocks etc.

I just left the Nova website and it appears that you have to buy at least one adaptor to match the spindle on your lathe. I guess that is one of the reasons that I like the One Way Talon chuck because the body is threaded 1" 8TPI and that matches my small lathe but I can still use it on my SS with the SS adaptor.

I'll be looking forward to hearing which adapter you receive from Shopsmith. I purchased mine there and received the standard Plain Bore adapter. It is significant to note that mine was dropped shipped from Teknatool (Fla) so Shopsmith really had nothing to do with the error. It is also significant to note that Teknatool was quick to act upon being notified. They immediately shipped the special Shopsmith adapter to be.

Kenbu, the Nova G3 (and other Nova chucks) are typically threaded 1 1/2" x 8TPI and then you buy the appropriate adapter for your particular lathe. So if you have multiple lathes with multiple spindle threads (or the Shopsmith 5/8" smoothbore), you simply buy the appropriate adapters.

If you have a metal lathe with the 1 1/2" x 8TPI spindle, the Nova chuck doesn't fit all that well because there are too few threads in the chuck to thread completely onto spindle -- the chuck won't screw all the way to the shoulder on the lathe's spindle.
