Here's my story. We caretake a ranch in MT. and in the main house which was built in the late 50s is a shop. The shop has a shopsmith V with everythng. I am trying to figure out how to use the lathe or I guess I am trying to figure out how to set up the lathe and use it. I do have experence in some wood working just not with lathes. I have look around online for info on how to set it up but have had no luck. I have all the pieces here just not sure how they attach to the shopsmith. So if anyone have any good ideas I would be very thankful

I guess what I am asking is I have a hole bunch of different parts for the lathe. and I am trying to figure out how to attach them. like the tailstock live cup center. I also have parts that look like they mount to something when you tighten with a hex nut. I am very very new to the lathe thing but want to learn pretty bad. I am just trying to figure out how to set it up safely with a piece of wood in it and make some cuts and go from their. Thanks for the info so far. I should take some pics of what I have. The old man who built the ranch with his with with needed a hobby in the winter so he has everything for this machine. Oh also any tips on what I should do to make sure the machine is safe and running right. It has not been used it a long time. Thanks

As Beeg would say: Lube it! He would be referring to oiling the sheaves.

BTW do NOT turn the speed control dial unless it is running.

That should keep you busy & get an idea of how the Shopsmith operates. You definitely want to remove the belt cover and do the periodic maint- cleaning, inspecting, & lubing. I'm not sure where you are, but chances are there might be a forum member near you who can do a show & tell.

Thanks for folks info. O.K. what I have found is a folder with all the paper work and more. Copyright 1957 on the owners manual. So my first question to get me going. I will have more. Is in the manual the first sentence under where it says HOW TO USE THE LATHE is: points on drive and cup centers should be in perfect alignment. I understand the alignment part but I am not clear on what points on drive are and cup centers. Like I said I am really new to lathes. I will have a few more as I go the manual is good on some stuff but not so clear on others. Thanks for everyone's time

The FIRST THING ya need to do is the oiling maint Then wax the tubes. Then ya can check the alignment between the drive center and tail stock center.
