Another Alnernative Method of Joinery

The "alternative to biscuits" thread got me to thinking about joinery methods other that what I most frequently use.

I have build several pieces of small furniture lately and the joinery in a couple of them left room for improvement. Especially true of a bookcase that is loaded heavily and gets relocated frequently.

I used simple dadoes in the vertical elements; some of these have failed.

This is my plan for the next bookcase.

This Shaker bench uses a saddle notch (for lack of a better name at the moment) mounting for each of the 6 gusset supports (3 in front and 3 in back) under the seat board. They are simply cut half way each direction but looking at your sketch-up I can see a decided advantage to the addition of shallow dadoes to the joint. I believe if I were making another I would go that route.

Not to hijack your thread, but.....
Here's a link to the Internet Archive for a book published in 1921.

There are various options on how to read the book in the "View the book" box on the left side of the screen. The PDF download is 11.1MB in size, but very clear. The "Read Online" option is nice if you don't want to do the download.

BTW, the joint you showed is a very, very, strong one. And, with a bit of careful project design, can be a portable "knock-down" bookcase/shelf-system as well.

Farmer, a favor please. Can you tell me the slope angle for the seat and the angle of the back rest with respect to the seat. I'm going to make one of these, only shorter, for my rear entry way. A place to seat while taking off shoes.

I held a gravity protractor against the slant angle of the back (after reading 0° across the seat) and it looks like 7°. Measuring it it tapers 1 1/4" in 9" of height. They are a little taller than 9" but I had cut the back top corners off at a radius about like the diameter of the base of a spray paint can so I couldn't measure at the very top. :) The very back of the back supports are 90° to the seat.
I had just saw a picture of this thing "somewhere" years ago so all dimensions were "about like so"... :D
The whole thing is just over 6' long. The floor to top of the back is about 27". If I were to build another for my use I would double check what I felt like how much front to back room I needed for my body size. At only 12" from the very back to the front edge I fall very close to an over-width load. :D Of course the design was originally planned to not consume too much hall width and being shaker they probably wanted it small enough to hang up every time they swept the floor. :)

Francis, what kind of wood is it made from ?
I like it very much, I would make it smaller in length but overall it looks very good.

Tulip poplar with a simple Cherry stain/sealer.
