What type of pen to use

What type of pen would one use to put the date, or a happy birthday on a project before you finish it?

Fine tip felt pen (fine sharpie) works for me.
Make sure the ink is dry and FYI alcohol based finishes can smear some inks (even so called permanent inks).
Some people also use wood burners.

Alcohol is my sharpie mark remover!

I like the wood burner. I use it on all my projects. I often get comments about projects being "Branded." The cane I use is branded and often admired. I love the comments saying, "Is that your name" followed by, "Hmmm, that makes it hard to steal." Jim

A wood burner is a good idea, thanks guys. I guess a fine tip sharpie would be ok as well. I wonder if they make a white sharpie for walnut?

Fine tip paint markers available at most hobby stores will work on darker woods. Consider Gold or Silver for the walnut for a nice elegant contrast.

Not certain how well this, or any of the following might work, but
how about one of those electric hand held etchers?

Watched a show where they hand carved letters using a flexible mat template that had an adhesive back. Sign shops sell them as magnetic flexible sigs. Drew the words on the mat, then cut them out with an exacto knife and then placed on the wood to use as a guide.
Lastly, if it's a very special occasion, see if someone near by has one those laser engraving machines.
