Handtools made by hand using what else? hand tools

Working with Hand tools is fun too and a great compliment to machining skills. I highly recommend developing hand tool skills to compliment your wood working abilities.

Nice. This on my long list of projects. You mentioned that it is built with an internal dowel that the bolt pressed down on. Oriented in line with the bolt or across it?

It's kind of hard to explain with out photos but I'll try.
Inside the top portion I drilled a recess that houses about 3/8" of 1/2" dowel.
Thew screw contacts the dowel and pressure is exerted against the crosspiece keeping it in position. Using the dowel as a compression surface keeps the crosspiece from getting chewed up by a nasty machine bolt.

Went to LJ and liked your photos and the drums, Holy*#<! Alot of work there but amazing results.
I may try the mallet this weekend.

Thanks for the comments on the drums. They were a lot of work but they paid off in the end. The band won their division championships in December. It was truly a team effort and took most of the summer. Hopefully we can find a buyer or two and sell them as we no longer need them for at least what we put into them.
For the mallet, I used the article "Make a Great Mallet" in the tools and shops edition of Fine Wood Working Magazine Winter 2012/13 Issue #230 as a guide.

Nice (and purty) tools. I think you will derive much pleasure using them.
Curious re the mallet face angle. Are both faces the same angle? I have been thinking about making one for myself and am thinking of having a wrist pivot angle on one face and an elbow pivot face on the other. I am considering a chunk of Black Locust for the head.

I just copied the measurements from the diagram. Top of head is 6"/2 = 3" from center for top, bottom is approx 2 7/8" from center. I scribed the line, setup my bevel gauge and copied the angle to the other side. So yes, the same angle. I don't know the degrees though as I don't have an actual protractor in my shop.
