This is a 1992 planer which I got from the original owner. 2 sets of new in the tube knives as well.
I have a SS mount version, but this came along and a stand alone version of this SPT just makes sense to me.

The guy was in his mid-80's and he also has a 56 greenie which is now spoken for as well

. Need to find a way to break it to the wife

. He bought it new. Original owner, has all the paperwork and attachments. Needs a once over but it all works. I was day dreaming about making it a dedicated belt sander-disk sander shorty.

Hope she doesn't notice the planer for a few weeks............

Hey you could send us her email and we will be most happy to remove any mystery for her as to your quiet sneaky looks. Plus the fact you can't look her in the eye. Aren't we nice people:D

Sorry, edited and added the pic I forgot earlier.

You know in my defense, and over the years, there has been a lot of things pop up in and around the kitchen, in her closet and in the grandkids hands, that I have no recollection of. If I could just get the greenie in a sack and in my closet, I could say I've had it for years!

(I think thats the story for most of her cloths)

I bought one used in late 2008. Got sick that day and spent the next day (off work) adjusting it for something to do. Had snuck it into the house, and wife never knew about it until I sold it a year later. I feel guilty but somehow not alone in an episode like that....

I put together my Shorty one piece at a time from a variety of sources. It just sort of morphed in the middle of the shop. It had been there, in one form or another, for at least 6 months when one day my wife asked where the second Shopsmith came from.

I do not believe that I have convinced her. to this very day, that I bought it in pieces and assembled right before her. She walks in and out through the shop every day that she leaves the house.

I am about to unveil still another surprise to her in much the same manner. We'll now see if she has become anymore aware of her surroundings than she was.

The trick is to not introduce anything in "one big piece". Bring it in and leave it set around.

Once again. I agree 100% with Red!

It's really kinda a "Truth or Consequences" situation. She WILL find out! If she takes one view, you will be home free:rolleyes: Especially if in her mind she can use this purchase to justify another that she has been wishing for.

On the other hand - in the extreme - You may be facing getting rid of the planer or getting rid of her:eek:

The best course for you is to tell her the story just like you told us and plead for understanding. Because you leveled with her, the worst you might face is the dog house for a while.

In any case, because you didn't let her in on the purchase in the first place you WILL hear about it (in surprising situations) for years to come.

Thanks guys, I tell her pretty much everything, sometimes the tools make me feel selfish. I have yet to make anything for myself, in my only defense. She had a bad week at work and it wasn't the right time.
However, she loves the woodworking and this morning at 8:30 am, while babysitting 2 grandkids, she watched Rough Cut, building the bedframe episode, with me. Its not too hard of a sale.

Hey, nice line oin a new Greenie! He wants $200 for it...little high, needs work, I guess it had a motor upgrade and he had it serviced (20 years ago). All works, b ut needs the once over and some green paint.

My tool strategy seems to be working out nicely with the better half. The used 520 purchase was discussed and approved, sorta quid pro quo for a couple of goodies that she wanted and got. The sub-$50 bargains from Craigslist are mere targets of opportunity .. those are not worth elevating to the level of the spousal radar screen.

But my wife, like most women, absolutely loves bargains! Yea, I know that they are likely to fall for fake ones, but that's a whole different matter. When I saw a nice clean Pro Planer on Craigslist the next town over for just $225, I told the wife what a new one cost, and mentioned that it would be indispensible in building her a new scrapbooking table. So she urged me leave work early and go snap it up!

And just tonight, a $20 Forstner-bit extension purchase was enthusiastically approved, albeit retroactively, because I could use it to make a new computer-chair pedestal, instead of spending $100 plus on a new chair. (The emerald ash borers, together with my trusty old Husquevarna chainsaw, provided ample hardwood or this project.)

Good communications = happy wife, good tools!

And just this weekend, the wife got addicted to eBay for scrapbook supply bargains. I set her up with an eSnipe account, she saved 60% on her first purchase, and had a blast doing it. Like I said, the ladies love bargains.
