Ss 10e

A friend gave me a Shop Smith model 10E serial number 20968. I was wondering how old it is. A new cord and switch, cleaning and polishing and everything is making sawdust. The only question is about the attachment of the little joiner table.

Welcome aboard. This is a great forum and I spend a lot of time here. You should also check out the
Yahoo Shopsmith10ERusers group there is lots of 10E/ER specific information there.
The 10E's were made in 1947-48, production changed to the 10ER in late 1948.
With regard to you joiner table, does it look like this

20968 is most likely in 1948, before the swap over to the ER.

I went to vintage machinery.org and downloaded the shopsmith magazine and some other things. The little joiner is like the top picture. It is missing a clip but that should be something I can rig up. Thanks for the welcome. So far every thing is working like a champ. There have been lots of helpfull things on the forum. Wow, 65 years old and still going strong, the machine that is.

It mounts in the table insert slot;)

Got it mounted. It will be ready to go asa I get the adjustment rods and table sliding. Came apart ok so everything should polish up. What is the original color? Right now its rusty grey, but looks like it was a blue-grey. The motor is AO Smith kind ofgreenish.

A dark blue with a hint of red(purple). A very small hint!!!!! And some were gray AIUI.
It is yours, color it whatever you like!:)

Teco, if you can find one on Ebay, the Mk5 model 500 jointer fence will fit the ER table, and in my (never to be) humble opinion, is MUCH better.
It clamps on to the front and back of the table, instead of the clamps through the saw slot hole. It also has a very easy to adjust in-feed table.

Make that a "shaper" fence and I totally(almost) agree. Much larger faces.
The infeed adjustment however is
not improved over the Model 10. A sloppy click index is not IMHO better than a tightly threaded knob. Dual sliding posts on the 10 are more precise than the single support post on the 500.
All that said, the 500 fence makes a fair jointer fence when used on the 10. The single support posts again.
I am ignoring the less obvious model 10 issue(alignment to the quill as a result of table slot mounting). The table mounted 500 shaper fence would have similar alignment 'issues'.
Tis however a more easily found option!
