Storage Shelf on Shelf

Some time ago I was puttering around the shop and thinking of all the stuff that needed a home in the shop. At the time I wanted to get my Model 500 accessories under control. Now as I am thinking out a move I have rediscovered my partial solution and thought I'd share it.
The room my shop is in has good shelves that came with the house. But they weren't giving me much storage/organization. So I added a shelf over an existing shelf in the shop. The shelf rests on strips I put around the perimeter of the existing shelf. There is also a divider board with cutouts so that saw blades on arbors and sanding disks can be stored efficiently without risk of bumping into each other. I then added recesses in the top surface for the fence, the drill chuck, the sanding drum, miter gage. extension table, and table insert.

The first picture shows the new shelf in use.

The second picture shows the added storage under the new shelf (removed) with room for 3 saw blades and 2 sanding disks. The third picture has the sanding disks remove to show the divider board more clearly.

The fourth picture shows the new shelf. What is not apparent are the recesses each tool/accessory is sitting in.

I like having the places laid out, Things get put away better/more consistently. If you really are serious about putting things away, then you need to know where the stuff goes to put it away. It speeds up looking for things too.
While I should do more, I won't provide for SS table saw's saw guards and other tools until my move is completed.
Turns out, this was very good puttering activity.

OK, last week, I helped my brother and his wife stabilize some shelving that was "re-utilized" storing their camera equipment. (They are both AVID photographers, even though my brother still calls himself an "amateur. His wife taught film for 25 years at a local high, until she retired.) (He's better with a camera than her, unless the camera is on a cell-phone. Long story, look it up.)
When they had their lovely abode reconfigured a few years ago, they put the old kitchen cabinets in the "lock-box" room, also known as a safe storage room.
One of the shelf units (old kitchen cabinets) was pulling away from the wall. So, we fixed it.
What I'm driving to, is the middle shelf in this unit was 1.5 inches higher, than the one below it. She WANTED it like that, and it stayed like that. And now, stronger than it used to be.

Is there some law/reason they need to be 'evenly' spaced?????:D

No, in fact if I had a third saw arbor you would see that I cannot get it between the 2 sanding disks with the sanding disk's current position.

They need to be about an inch farther apart to get 3 saw blades and 2 sanding disks on the shelf. Just a matter of widening the slots in the divider, as there is room on the 36" shelf. BTW the divider board,1/4" ply, does no weight bearing. All the weight of the disks and saw blades/arbors is on the shelf below the divider.

Excellent ideas, Sam. I'm still trying to get my garage shop together after moving in 6 months ago. I need to build more shelves, cabinets and places to hang things. Anybody have a good solution for storing 6" X 48" sanding belts to prevent creases and not smash them flat? I was thinking of using a 2.5" X 20" old shop vac tube hung flat against the wall on hooks or cut in to 3 smaller sections and fixed to the wall endwise.

I was referring to yer SIL's shelf in de lockup.

Think towel rod with one end 'open' and parallel to the wall/floor.

I use a three-quarter inch dowel about 8 inches long pegged into a stud.

I have them stored one inside another - 4 belts taking up one blet's storage space in a tub with drum sanding tubes and other sanding supplies. I am not sure having them stored inside of each other is good for the belts and invite comments.

I did the same as Jim, but used three dowels. Two to spread the belts and the third to limit the sag. I think there are 6 or 7 belts stored this way.

Whoops! Used 5 dowels - each lathe turned 1 1/8" diameter and about 6 1/2" long.
Here's the photo I promised. Shelf above to collect dust or any other thing that will fit.
