Connector repair

Has anyone had the Headstock/accessory drive connector break in the middle of a job? I don't care to buy an extra, so repaired this one. It will never break again.

They very rarely break, but it does happen. Are your hubs lined up?

I guess we expect too much. I purchased this unit 1-22-1963 from Montgomery Ward in Oklahoma City (Long gone now). Bought the demonstration unit. Got the Mark V, jig saw, Band saw, jointer, and hard back book and all the bells and trinkets for the ridiculous price of $ 190.55 plus 2 % tax. Those were good old days. Still have the original receipt.

When I was using my bandsaw to cut metal, I was forced to go to a LoveJoy Spider 5/8" ID coupler. I replaced the plastic coupler with a Lovejoy L050 with a 5/8" bore hubs (no keyway) and the associated SOX spider. The three piece unit (2 hubs plus spider) fit perfect, without need for any modification.
You need two coupling hubs and one SOX spider.I got it all from http://www.use-enco.com <www.use-enco.com> . The part number for the hubs is
990-4047 ($3.20 ea) and for the spider is 990-4042 ($1.94). Enco will sell in small quantities, which is nice since I ran across several other vendors with a $50 minimum.

Some would say you have made the sacrificial lamb invincible. Not sure I agree with that! However Beeg has a point! I do not think age alone is responsible for failure. These old 'Zytel' couplers are very tough! Much better than the current version that reminds me of stuff other than 'nylon'.

Bill, I love the idea of the Lovejoy couplings! Is there a reason you picked the buna-n spyder versus the urethane? Do you ever run into a clearance problem with the overall length being shorter than the original SS coupler?
