I thought Fred would enjoy this, demoed at the last local woodturners club meeting -
http://akwoodturners.org/index.html. Scroll down to where Tom Coghill is demonstrating how to raise the grain on a bowl or other turned piece. He only demoed for a few seconds, as he does the real burning outdoors.

Ha, that wouldn't go over well in my garage/shop. I wonder what that bowl smells like after the process.

Here is a picture of an example of Tom's work. During the demonstration, he only burned the bowl for a few seconds and it got plenty smokey. He does his real burning outdoors. After he chars the wood, he uses a wire brush to remove the char, and repeats a few times. The softer summer grain burns more and the grain patterns are accentuated. He then paints and later applies and wipes off a contrasting color. I haven't noticed any residual smoke smell in any of his work that I have seen.
