The first picture is of a step stool that I made several years ago. Unfortunately time marches on. Some of the fun things that happen is its harder to step up and the sense of balance is not what it once was. SWMBO asked me to make a new step stool that was shorter than the one she was using. My first thought was to cut the legs on the old step stool. That was not the solution she needed a taller stool to reach the upper cupboards.
My thought was a two step stool with a post with a round knob on top fastened to the side to help with balance while stepping up. During the development phase I clamped a post on the old step stool to get some idea of the length of the balance pole. My wife suggested rather than placing the balance pole on the side put in the middle of the back so she could place both hands on the support post when stepping up. She also wanted hooks that could hold objects while stepping up on the upper step. The second picture is what I come up with. The third picture is the handle with horns rather than hooks on the side.
