shopsmith repair

i upgraded my shopsmith in 2004.i have found that i have a crack in the carriage on the left where the table post slides up and down.
can it be welded,has anyone else had this problem?

Can you give a bit more info? Is it actually a crack? I have a 520 system and there is a cut in the carriage to allow for clamping action.Can you post a pic?

I don't believe it can be successfully welded because it is cast aluminum. I think your best bet will be to save up "all of your quarters" and plan to buy a replacement carriage.
In the meantime, how about a photo that shows clearly where the crack is. Survival sort of depends on where the crack is with respect to the stress points. Logic says that the crack is probably the result of that stress which occurs when the carriage is moved back and forth or the table is raised and lowered. I don't give it much chance.

Yes, cast aluminum can be welded it is called "Heliarc" welding, very high temp/current electrical arc with helium gas, not all welding shops have it though.

It was a video of heliarcing a cracked cast aluminum valve cover for a car.
