Hello gents (and ladies),

A long story made short is this:

I received my Great-Granddad's Mark V from my cousin recently. It had been passed around the family over the years, but we recently bought our first home (Yay!) and I had lots of projects planned and no more than a compound miter saw. Before going to pick it up I was told it "needed some TLC, going over, etc." BOY, was that an understatement!

Sadly, nearly everything on this machine is broken. The work table's leading edge is rounded over, the carriage has been welded back together at some point. There is no handle to raise and lower the work table, but that's ok because the teeth are broken anyway. The table's insert is welded as well. The belt is shot as is the quadrant assembly. The speed control handle's teeth are missing. The only component connector piece is broken (sort of). A bent bolt is in place of almost every handle. That's to say nothing of the sawdust/grease/rust caked everywhere.

Luckily though, not everything is broken! Most of it is missing instead. No miter gauge, no drill chuck, no saw arbors... But the best part is it came with the model 610 jig saw. Apparently it was leaking at some point and rather than order or make a gasket they instead replaced the 10 weight oil with red grease Cause you know, those are practically the same thing *sigh*

Anyways, rather than try to put all my money into this machine, I have purchased another from craigslist and will likely put this outside with a tarp over it and just use it for lathe work or something... Hmmmm, maybe I made a short story long. Whoops

All of this is a preface to ask you guys if you can ID a part from a CL picture... I have an idea of what it is, but don't want to color any one's thoughts.

What is the thing on the right in the 6th picture over? Yeah, yeah, I'll find out in a week or so when he brings it here, but I'm impatient! And, wanted to kind of introduce myself with my story.

Sounds like your Great Grand Dad's machine needs a proper burial.

Anyhow, the items in the 6th picture are (from bottom to top) (1) an upper saw guard, (2) aluminum t-slot with miter bar, (3) miter gauge with extension and (4) the shaper/drum sander fence.

Wow, that was fast thanks! Rats, for some reason I was thinking, hoping is probably more accurate, that it was a router fence. Still handy I suppose. Thanks again

I don't own one of those shaper/drum sander fences but I don't know why it could not also be used as a router fence as well (in conjunction with the 1/2 or 1/4 inch router chuck). Of course there's folks who don't think the Mark V makes a good router (not enough RPMs).

Thanks. Seems like it might work just fine. I have thought about the fact that the RPMs are lower, 10k I think, instead of what 20 or 35 or something? Seems like SLOW movement on my part would help with that, but I'm very much a woodworking newbie. I think I got myself a pretty sweet deal on this one though Can't wait to use it!

Yeah, I read that later. Jumping the gun I guess As I understand it, the extra motor is another electric motor for the headstock. Pretty serious score I think.

Perhaps. Question is, what is in the box? More than likely one that had been removed. If not burned, It is restorable.

I think you got a good collection! Lot of 'extra' stuff.

Z-man, that is indeed the shaper fence. Yes, it will work as a drum sander fence, as well as a router fence.

That model, will also work on a 10 series (model 10 E and ER) Shopsmith too. You may want to look around for one of them.
(Can't have too many Shopsmiths!)

Hey guys,

Just thought I'd give everyone an update. I got the machine and extras on Sunday and after going through everything I am VERY happy with my purchase! Serial number puts it as a 1980 model. Aside from a working machine, and typical jointer, lathe, and drill chuck items it came with:

Cross cut sled
Shaper fence/Drum Sander Kit
Molder attachment and a few blades
Extra featherboards
Shopsmith brand chisel set
Tenon jig
Wobble dado
Little miter slot/table extension (Not really sure what this is) It's about 8" x 8" and fits in the fence guide in front of the table with a miter slot in it.
And I think the miter gauge extension with grip tape on it, since I just now recognized the stop blocks for what they are from this picture here:

6 or 8 saw blades (each with their own arbor!)
Also came with a live center, and a different style abrasive disc, I think the one for the sharpening guage kit. No gauge, but hey, who's compaining!?

As for the work done. I pulled the headstock off and completely went through it. Everything has been pulled apart, cleaned, and put back together. Unfortunately, it looks like someone was in there before who was a bit rough with things, but nothing too major seems messed up. Someone who was unaware of the quarter turn lock system CRANKED on the headstock and carriage locks so those were pretty deformed but some careful filing fixed that . It looks like not much had been cleaned before or maybe oiled instead of waxed...

It's missing a washer or two amongst the quill stop assembly bits, easily replaced. The saw guard seems to be a problem fitting as there is some "custom" work done to make it work I haven't tried to put it on completely yet. I seem to remember a thread somewhere about having to retrofit some guards to fit some older tables or vice versa(?)

Anyway, I will try to post some pics soon!

PS JPG you were right the "extra" motor looks to be the one that was pulled, no idea if it works or not, hopefully I'll never need to find out
