I am so new to this that I'm not sure I'm phrasing any of this properly. I have been reading articles and stumbled on this forum last week. I have a small space in my basement that I would like to make into a woodworking area. I have heard good things about the Shopsmith and have a couple of feelers out on a 510. They are asking $899 and I have offered $800. What do you think?

Sure looks like a good deal! Has bandsaw, dust collector manual, as well as a 510! Even 5 foot tubes.

Welcome to the forum! Prices for used Shopsmiths vary a lot by location, model, condition, basic completeness and extras/accessories. When buying a Shopsmith, you want to make sure you know what should be there and what is there and adjust your offer accordingly.

FYI, the photos don't actually show a complete 510 set up -- the parts may yet all be there just not showing up in the photo.

I see the main work table. on which is the miter gauge, rip fence, upper saw guard (presumably the lower guard is there too but that needs verification), and the extension table. Training videos and manuals.

There should be two additional floating tables, 4 connecting tubes, 2 telescoping legs, a drill chuck & key, a lathe tail stock, lathe tool rest, lathe drive center/spur, lathe cup dead center, 5 lathe chisels and at least one saw blade arbor (with a blade would be nice). EDIT: Almost forget, 12 inch sanding disc.

Basically, you want to see everything shown here http://www.shopsmith.com/markvsite/standardaccess.htm EXCEPT the 510 does not come with items 16-19.

As for extras, I see a band saw (with optional fence) and a dust collector, both of which are nice to have, and a dado set (need a dado arbor to use them).

If everything is present, I think your offer is reasonable.

I have had a model 510 for 25+ years and it has been a great machine. One of the strengths of Shopsmith is how well dust collection works. Better than most stand alone machines. The other replies give you all the info you need and sounds like a good deal. I would recommend trying to find a woodworking class through adult ed. or Woodcraft stores have them if you are close to one of them, to help you get started. They won't have Shopsmith tools but the techniques are the same. The big thing is to have fun.

If you do buy the Shopsmith, please look at beginner videos and articles under the Woodworking Resources link at the top of the page. You might also see if there is anyone on here close enough to you who might give you some hands-on tutorial time such as basic maintenance and operation.

Consider:

The bandsaw is worth up up $200.
Same for the Dust Collector.

That leaves $499 for the 510.

Assuming all the stuff is there that should be, that is also a decent price.

The condition appears very good.

Bottom line is, what is it worth to you?

I realize you have not had much time to research/compare local 'value', but IMHO that is a decent price. $800 is obviously better.


So even if the seller balks at $800, stay in the loop and make a counter offer, but I would do so in their presence.

If you are not experienced with power tools, do proceed cautiously and get some knowledge regarding safe use of them. Not to frighten, but merely to make you aware that there are hazards.

That's not a bad price for that much equipment for eastern Washington. I've been watching the listings for quite a while and if it all runs, it's a good buy.
