Why and how do you use the adjustment for the tailstock hole?
Ive searched the forums and read the manuals but seem to be missing this information.

Hi gk777,
If you have the owners manual, it is in there: For the 510, it is in the alignment section, items 94 through 98; for the 500, items 88 through 92. If you have the Alignment & Maintenance book that comes with the Help Kit, it is on page 32 and 33 for the 500, 510 and 520. The reason for doing this adjustment is to align the centers for the lathe operation. The ecentric allows you to make adjustments to match the center that you put in it to the tailstock to the center that you put into the headstock, which is not adjustable.

Thanks for the reply. I have a 520 The manual, i beleive is the instruction manual noted on the 3 ring binder, but inside it says how to use this manual. All my pages have a letter followed by a number (i.e B-3). The guy I bought it from said I had all the books. Going by the covers covers I haveShopsmith Mark V Home Workshop system Instruciton manual, Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone and 10 simple Lessons to woodworking. Still can't find it. Wondering if I did not get some of the manuals pages.

I don't have the 520, only the 510; however, for that particular alignment, I do not see that there wood be any difference. Quoted from my 510 manual:
ALIGN THE LATHE CENTERS
94. Remove the saw guards and the saw blade, then loosen the carriage locks. Move the headstock and carriage all the way to the right and lock them in place.
95. Mount the drill chuck on the spindle as shown in Fig. B-113.* Completely close the chuck jaws, as in Fig.B-114.*
96. Mount the cup center into the tailstock's adjustable center, as seen in Fig. B-115*, then mount the tailstock into the base mount (right side). Tighten the mount lock.
97. Loosen the quill lock. Extend the quill (seen in Fig. B-116)*, so the drill chuck almost touches the cup center point and the center point could fit into the chuck jaws.
98. If the center point does not "fit" into the chuck jaws, determine whether you need to adjust the cup center point horizontilly and/or vertically. Then do the following:
a. To adjust the cup center point horizontilly, loosen the setscrew that locks the adjustable center, as seen in Fig. B-117*. Rotate the adjustable centeras needed to line up the cup center with the drill chuck, then tighten the setscrew.
b. To adjust the cup center point vertically, loosen the mount lock, then loosen the tailstock stop collars. Raise or lower the tailstock in the base mount until the cup center point vertically lines up with the drill chuck, then tighten the mount lock. Pressthe stop collars down firmly against the base mount and tighten the collar setscrews, as shown in Fig. B-118*.
* Sorry, I cannot supply the illustrations:o .
