I am new to this a just got a used Mark V. I rotated the motor shaft by hand in order to turn the speed control to the slow position. It wouldn't turn all the way but got close to the slow indicator. I turned the motor on and it worked until I turned the speed control to the M or N position near the Fast position. Then the motor shaft stopped turning. I shut it off. Any suggestions?

Are you sure that the motor actually stopped turning? If the motor shaft binds enough to stall the motor them the fuse for the circuit powering the SS will blow. If the fuse did not blow then the motor probably did not stall. I believe that the apparent stalling may be caused by the V belt becoming slack when the control sheave ( the one controlled by the speed control) opened and the one on the motor did not close to keep the V belt in proper tension. This condition is generally caused by dirt and debris in the sheave shafts causing restricted movement. The only good remedy ( IMHO ) is to tear down the headstock and do a thorough cleaning and oiling. Also check the V belt for proper size. The widest edge of the belt should be about 9/16 inches wide.
You can try to start by only oiling the machine but I have found that in a lot of cases oiling alone does not clean out the old oil and crud inside the sheave bores.
The photo shows the difference between the size of a new belt compared to an old belt. If you have any more question or need some more help come back here.

Thank you for the suggestions Bob. I am now in the process of cleaning and oiling everything.

Thank you so much Bill for the picture and suggestions. I pulled the motor out and cleaned up everything inside. I am going to oil it all and put in a new belt. The motor wires look funky to me. I am going to take a picture of them and put them here and maybe you can give your opinion.

The motor is a good start and the floating sheave most likely caused the quill shaft to stop turning at higher speeds.

The control sheave (internal) likely needs the same cleanup/lubricating treatment. A sticking floating sheave is bad enough, but a sticking control sheave causes damage to other parts.

If the wires look like these you have a GE motor and the wires should be replaced. An easy fix for an Electric motor shop. Bill V

That is exactly what the wires look like. I took the motor out and cleaned everything inside and out. I replaced the long belt. I used electrical tape to mend the wires going to the on/off switch. I oiled the two parts I saw in one of Jacob Anderson's videos. Put it back together. Motor started and the quill (?) turned but not as fast as the dial indicates it should. I can't turn the speed dial. It is frozen. And it sounds really rough like tennis shoes tumbling in the dryer. Should I take the speed dial apart?
