Has anyone ever built a guitar?

The fellow I bought my SS Mark V from (3/15/15) is a musician and he, unfortunately never had wood working interest that his father did. Fortunate, for me :)

He also is disabled, he stutters terribly. It is not that I pity him, it is just that he is a nice guy and I would like to build him something (that he can use and cherish), using his now departed Dad's Mark V.

So, has anyone ever built a guitar? And if so, where do I begin? Please advise!

I recommend some of the books and DVDs sold by Luthiers Mercantile International, http://www.lmii.com, and also the many YouTube videos by Robert O'Brien. Search "Luthier Tips du Jour"

What kind of musician is he? Acoustic guitar, electric guitar, etc. It might help you determine what he would like the most. Electric's are much easier to build.

Also, check out Stewart-MacDonald http://www.stewmac.com for parts, supplies and specialized tools (e.g., routing templates) for guitar-makers.
