Hi all,

As it says in the title I'm new to the Shop smith brand as well as to woodworking. I recently acquired an old Mark VII in a trade for my old mountain bike. I've been reading up on general maintenance, oiled the sheaves, and am now reading the power tool woodworking for everyone online book.

I'll post up some pictures when I'm home but the unit seems to be in ok condition and runs well. The speed control cam looks good as does the gear rack although I managed to break a small 1" section from the end (I believe I'm missing the little knob that disconnects the pinion from the rack to freely move the head stock).

Anyhow, I've been trying to find out if I can attach the blade guards from the other SS models onto the MVII*. from my research it looks like I am not able to without modification. However, is there one that I can somehow modify to fit on my MVII*? I know I can use it without guards but as I said I'm new to woodworking and I know that even if I'm very careful, I will make errors.

Please refer to it as a Mark VII. A Mark 7 is a different animal. Yes we know it has a label with Mark "7" on it, but that be part of the problem.

Not sure you will be successful adapting, and I believe the Mark VII were sold as my Goldie was(no guard), they will be very scarce.

One like it was available as a sawdust collector/guard in a Shopsmith Custom Accessories catalog published with the Magna American Mark VII.

Also in the owner's manual I have, on page 13, it shows another type that was available for the Mark VII.

Thank you redleg. Do you happen to know if the upper blade guard was also a unique design.

This was an old listing for an upper and lower set for a 500 but they are the same part numbers as for the Mark VII. I never could get accustomed to the upper saw quard.

Awesome, thank you very much. It's good to know that those are interchangeable between the 500 and the VII.

Maybe! There are different '500' versions.

This picture was from the listing mentioned in my earlier reply. Heathicus posted an accessory catalog in his Ultimate Sawsmith post that was similar to bulletin I have and lists the part numbers and Mark VII reference.

I noticed that the dust port on the guard in the brochure is a rectangular design. Any idea what for?

To let the debris escape. Connecting to a vac or DC was not then being 'considered'. Also a matter of clearing the table mounting post.
