Bottom Guard with Sanding Disk

Hello. I have a Mark V 510. I was trying to set up the bottom guard so I could hook up the dust collector. It appears that the arbor is too short with the guard on to attach properly. I see online at ShopSmith there is a dust attachment for the 500 but I have the 510. Curious if I have a sanding disk that's older? The arbor itself is 7/8" long without the flange that attaches to the disk. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi James
The sanding disc with a 7/8" arbor shaft is for the older model 500. The arbor shaft on the 510/520 tables should be approx.
1 3/4". It sounds like your 510 started life as a 500 and the previous owner did not upgrade the sanding disc when changes were made.

I have a 510 original that I upgraded to a 520 later.
But the sanding disc was with my 510 and depending on where you put you tape measure, I put mine against the plate of the disk directly and I have a 2 " long arbor. I guess that it is this long to accommodate the bottom guard which I have on with the sanding disk right now.
Hope this answer you question.

OK, that sounds about what the correct length should be. This information was helpful. Now just need to find one. Thanks again.

SS still sells 500 to 510/520 upgrade kits so the longer sanding disk arbor should be available directly from them.

According to the SS website
Disc is $55.00+
Hub # 514493 $23.40
Hex socket screws #513153 4 at $0.80 each
Might want to try E Bay. There are usually a few out there

Yes, they are on eBay all the time. Just make sure it is a long hub. A lot of sellers don't differentiate.
Check out Item 171729239757. Buy it now for $37.37 with three disks and $12.65 shipping. It looks almost new, beautiful condition.

No because the sanding disk and the guard both attach to the quill in a fixed relationship and move together when you extend the quill.

I see. Only having an original 1955 I am unaware of issues involving the 505 plus models.
Thanks for the clarification.
