Shopsmith Forums

I know it is early but we had snow here in Minneapolis yesterday and the MSO mentioned it looked like Christmas. That reminded me of a project my youngest daughter wanted me to make. My Dad had made this nativity scene for his grand-daughters and she would like to have ones like it for her kids. I have searched, but not endlessly, for the pattern with no luck. Perhaps someone on the forum is familiar with the pattern. I haven't attached a picture in the new forum layout so if it doesn't display someone post the steps.

So much depends on what kind of a plan you are looking for. Large year size from plywood? Smaller table size plans?

Thanks for your interest/reply. I have a picture of what I'm looking for but cannot get the picture to insert. Appears to download but I cannot get it to move into the message. Thanks.

Ignore this photo, just reminding myself the steps to post so I can explain (below, after my initial griping)

For some reason Shopsmith went from one rotten forum program that worked differently than any others you see anywhere to another horrible forum program that works differently than any others you see anywhere. I suspect it is not their fault, really, so much as their web host's. Usually you tell the host to enable the forum program they provide and that is that. Shopsmith can't be faulted for nit being web developers, they make Shopsmiths. I do wish they would get some outside advice on these things, though (assuming the above is what happened)

Here is how you add photos:
Click "Upload attachment" (down below the area you toe your message, as all these steps are)
Click "Choose file". (Brings up the file selection dialog from your computer, will differ in details from one OS to another but will probably be familiar)

Once you have selected a file you have to click the red button that says "Add the file"

Still not done!

It will now show up in a new section below the editor labeled "Posted Attachments"

You have to click the button labeled "Place Inline"

It will now appear in your text in the form of an html snippet looking something like this (not including the words "Code" and "select all": In theory it will be displayed in the text where that snippet is, though it usually seems to just end up at the bottom.
Also, on some of my devices that snippet gets added to the very beginning of my post when I click " Place Inline ", regardless of where my cursor is at the time.

I've ignored the comment field because it didn't work for me, as I recall, and the bulk of your text will make the purpose of the image clear.

As I said, this is not like any other forum. Furthermore, it involves too many extra steps that are pretty clearly the result of the programmer not really being proficient. There is a reason we see the same few layouts on forum after forum across the intertubes: programs are complicated to write and it makes much more sense to use one that already exists and works great for so many others, or works just OK but everyone already suffered through the learning curve on someone else's website... Especially since the programs are free in most cases. Again, this is probably the result of Shopsmith having a crappy web host. I'm dealing with that situation right now with a client and am working on convincing them switching hosts can be painless.

But if the attachment/picture is too large it will not be added. You will get a message at the top of the page but it is not very obvious unless you are paying attention.

I can't blame a web host, no limits there.

We were originally on an ancient version of vBulletin forum software. I wanted to preserve old postings within the forum. Very few of the current forum programs had software to convert from that ancient version of vBulletin, so our choice was limited.

1) It IS different from what 'was'.

2) Human factors just plain suck(IMHO).

3) You bounce all over the post as the photos are added.

4) The last pix added 'control' area looks the same as all the pix already added, and you are dumped looking at the 'first' one.

5) As for 'web host' that is totally irrelevant. The web host is not providing the forum software.

6) The current software is 'inexpensive' which allows this forum to continue.

7) This forum is being provided by the mother ship with little(none?) benefit to the MS.


Earlier today I noticed the sticky that describes the upload process was not updated to reflect the new forum SW. I hope Admin will look into fixing that. That has got to be extremely confusing to 'new members'.

Finally since Admin posted while I was creating this, let me now express my thanks for the backward compatibility consideration.

Finally got it to load. Problem was that the file size was to large. Resized to around 600 x 800 and then the "Place in line" button appeared and all is right with the world at this moment in time anyway. Thanks all for the help. Now has anyone seen that nativity scene?
