New purchase, buyers remorse?

I have wanted a shopsmith since I first saw them at the fair in the early 1980's. Well today I finally made a purchase of a used shopsmith system. These are the main things I got.

I also got a lot of little nicknacks and doodads that I have to catalog. Plus a small library worth of books magazines and plans.

After getting home I started to have a little buyers remorse wondering if I paid to much. I paid 2000 for all of it, I may have been a bit excited when I saw all the toys.

Everything works, the mark5 has no dents dings or other abuse issues. I did have one question though.

When the mark5 is on low speed it makes a sound like metal rubbing on metal not unpleasant but just a weird sound. When I speed it up it sounds fine and healthy. Any ideas?

Although this is my first post I will be an active forum member I am very excited to pick up my wood working hobby from so many years ago.

Welcome to the forum. It looks like you have a few high dollar items but others will need to chime in on if this was a good deal or not.

I believe you got a very fair deal. Some of those items like a Ring Master are very valuable assuming you want to make some fancy bowls.

You did good. A lot of members here would take that deal in a heartbeat, not including the uncatalogued nicknacks and doodads.

There are a number of things that can cause metal on metal rubbing, I suggest you resist the temptation to play with your new toys until you have read the maintenance forum stickies and give everything a once over a lube. Thank you all for your reply's and well wishes. I got the shopsmith off of the truck and took the rear housing off. It quieted it a little however it was still there. Got my ear down by the motor and thats where it is. Just like the link posted above. Got a little work to do but not much. Might as well replace the belts while I am in there.

I woodn't worry about the belts right now. Just clean it up, wax and lube it. Then see if the motor sheave is the cause of the noise. I think ya got TO MUCH for that price.

Buyers's remorse is indeed appropriate. You owe the 'seller' more than you paid!!!!

The fan sheave rub is a very likely cause of scraping noise at low speed. At lower speeds, the belt exerts more thrust against the fan sheave towards the motor(the belt center line shifts with speed control setting).

Do beware the floating sheave tensioning spring. Watch Nick's sawdust session. I will add a link here shortly.

The fan sheave has a set screw on the motor side hub. It is really tight!!! It is accessed through the hole in the bottom of the motor pan in the middle of the vent louver.

I certainly would have paid $2000 and kept the few things I could use and sold the rest (including the Mk.V) piecemeal on Craigslist. Probably would take a few months but I'd end up with free stuff and about $200-500 in profit.
