At least one project a year I do with hand tools just to keep my skills from getting to old and rusty. This year I needed to redo the divider in our herb box. Well we really redid the whole thing except for an end section with rhubarb. Some of the plants tend to take over adjacent boxes and some things just die out or we get tired of things and want a change.

The divider we had just plain wore out after many years. I had some cedar fence pieces (5/8 x 6 x 72) that were around from last year so I used them for this project. I decided to build it in the backyard since no power tools were going to be used and beside it was closer to the place it was going to be used.

Construction was with interlocking joints and nailed on the perimeter. No fine wood working needed as it is to be a rustic addition to the garden.

Now all that is left is to do the planting and wait.

Nice! Great idea. We just started growing herbs, may need to try something like this next year.

The older I get the higher I think beds should be raised. I'm currently thinking hip high.

Tables are not bad if you work there daily but the watering requirements can be a problem for a more casual gardener like me. If a bed is in full contact with the ground there will be enough moisture wick up for all but the worst drought conditions.

I did my planting in the box so it is now up to the wife to finish her part. To be fair she has most of her stuff in the ground in the form of seeds. Most of mine were in the form of plants.
Far back right is the lavender, then the chives, rosemary, chocolate mint, stevia (sp?) and dill as seeds. The left side belongs to the wife.

Put fresh wood chips between boxes and did a whole lot of other things today but I no where near being done so my wood working projects are suffering. Still need a couple more days of good weather to finish up the bulk of it by Memorial Day (3 days left so I might make it).
