Serving tray, made from 100% oak stringer, of a pallet. The hand slots are, where the pallet forks would have lifted the load. These same slots, were left untouched. Only the slotted sides received both faces, planed (this was done, to try and alleviate possible splinters) Bottom boards are planed on the up side. And all inside surface, were also planed. All other surfaces where left, as they came off the pallet. 16x14-1/2x3-1/2". All lumber is 5/8" or thicker.

Tomorrow, it will receive a poly finish.

It did not get any finish, on Monday. Time got away from me!

Good strategy on the re-use of the parts! Looking nice.

Today I will seek, some sort of thin/light weight strapping, for the bottom boards of this serving tray. As Oak has a tendency of splitting. This same metal strapping should virtually eliminate the splitting.

This idea is a take-off of the old Coca-Cola crates!

I did see, that the big box stores sell copper and brass flashing. I may just go and get a few lengths of it and make my own strapping.

My products, all must stand the test of time... or I will not peddle them!

For the metal strapping, ask at the box store if they have any they are throwing out.
It has been somewhat superseded by shrink wrap and plastic strapping but some things are still shipped with the black steel strapping and it just gets thrown out at the receiving end.

Hi, Extra! - nice use of pallet wood and a nifty tray.

I wouldn't worry, even a little bit, about splitting. With the size of the tray you would have to apply a couple hundred pounds to one of the slats to get it to split. The slats would probably pull off of the sides before splitting. Most all things you would put on the tray will cover several slats.

If you want strapping for aesthetics - O.K., but not needed for strength.

I did manage to build another on Monday. But our pallets round here, are often times, not built with Oak Stringers. So, two will have to suffice, for right now!
