I thought I'd try a different finish technique for a routed sign.

First, I roughed it up a bit with the band saw. Here's the raw wood. Next, I turned up the heat with a blow torch. Here's the piece extra-crispy. Then, I routed the letters. Didn't have to go very deep, either. The scorch was just on the surface.

That looks terrific! What template/system did you use to rout the letters?

I like that!!!!

I use the "state park" set from Rockler. Very simple to use and produces great results.

I used to do this years ago. The way I did it was after the burning, I used a wire brush to blend and knock of the charcoal. The couple of coats of poly and it came out great. The great thing about this process is you don't have to wait on the stain to dry! Great job.

This is a very noob question, but is there a way of doing the letter routing using the SS in router mode? (over or under)

I would love to do that but everyone always seems to use a hand router and template. :/
