Has anyone tried to retrofit a canister filter onto a Shopsmith dust collector? my soon to be shop is in a small area in the basement, and I dont want to contaminate the whole house with fine wood dust.

It would be difficult to convert to a canister type filter because the Shopsmith DC3300 dust collector's motor housing extends up into the "filter bag area." Shopsmith sells a 42 inch fabric filter bag upgrade that is good down to 1 micron. It makes quite a difference compared to the standard hood.

In my 15'x15' basement shop, along with DC to all machines I have 2 20", 3 speed box fans with 2" pleated Merv 8 filters on them, I run them on low when I am in there just for heat/ac control, but when I machine I turn them on high, I get very little free dust on horizontal surfaces, and the filters cost 3.00 at the big box stores. The fans cost 17.00 each and are much quieter then a air dust filtration machine.
