Although I haven't posted in quite a while, I have been dropping in from time to time just to lurk around a bit and Keep-On-Learnin'. I figure it's about time to post some stuff I did with the SS I got last December.

It isn't much, but that's how time went around here this year.

The first thing I did was to rebuild the rotten patio fence. Pressure treated wood in the ground and pine 1x6s spanning them. All treated with cedar tone Olympic Stain Sealer.
Sure, I could have used my circular saw - or even a hand saw - but HEY I had a brand new Mark 7 that need to feel useful for my first project! Besides, I'm still a beginner unless you count wood shop almost 40 years ago :/

I didn't take photos of the next item I made with the SS. A sort of cabinet/counter cover for Ms Twist's brother. Just needed to cover a short water heater and have it match the cabinets in his kitchen. Oh well. I'm not much for painted wood anyway, but it did come out very well. And it was my foot-in-the-door reason to get a paint sprayer

The project after that was quite fun, but I don't have time to post it today. Hopefully this weekend.

Turned out nice. Of course that gnome really raises the bar.

What wood is it? I'm kinda thinking cedar with a picture at sunset.

I, too, waited about 25 years from Shop Class to getting a Shopsmith. Ever since, I've been making up lost time!

Wow Beave, either you're very perceptive or you read my wall of text . The woods were listed in the OP, but the gnome is special. Details may be available later, but . . . cedar wood stain/sealer is the gist of it - and sunset for sure. I also have a morning shot that makes the fence (and its upper attachment) glow in transcluence.

Just in case some of you noticed, there is some PhotoShop (PSP) editing that masks something above the fence that I am (as a newbie) somewhat proud of - made of cedar. Just the luck of the draw that the color of the treated, stained wood matched actual cedar, but we (Ms Twist and I) do like it enough that the prototype on the fence dictated that it will stay there.

As in my OP, it will be revealed later. Just waiting on the right lighting AND completion of that project before posting amongst all y'all pros.

As I mentioned, painted wood is not my preference, but I did manage to learn enough finishing techniques to leave an impression on my in-laws. Very smooth and glossy - everybody likes glossy, right?

Uh oh... I may have more of that type of work ahead

My tastes run toward satin finishes.
If I use a glossy finish, a bit of sanding will remove the shine and take it down to semi gloss or satin.

I am totally with you on that. #0000 steel wool works to knock down a glossy finish also.
