CNC a tree

I'm bored this morning, so.. I'm going to try making a router bowl on the CNC machine out of this lovely piece of fire wood.

Will post results... Success or failure lol

I am not being critical .... And I am not complaining, but as a newbie to this "hobby/obsession" isn't a CNC machine kind of an oxymoron to the term "Woodworking". Yes, it is wood, and yes the wood is being worked, but the "working" is actually done by a machine. Yes we could go back to hand tools, I anticipate the arguments, but is this taking machines too far ....

As a newbie, I am having a blast "making stuff" with my hands and the machines, not just the machine .....

You are overlooking the time/effort in telling the machine what to do!

I tend to agree with you.. I don't really consider this to be fine wood working..

However,
Cnc / cam is a whole different skill set with different cutters and techniques and a specialized set of knowledge. Its just as much fun as wood working if you have computer skills and opens up more possibilities and materials.

Also, writing the code to run the cnc machine is a challenge in itself that requires some moderately complex calculations.

I'll have to post the code I wrote to cut that out when I go back to work tomorrow so you can see.

That is part of the enjoyment ....

This is easy programming, just machine codes with Cartesian coordinates. The real fun doesn't come till you start doing spherical surfaces.

Well----- I can hardly wait until I own a CNC machine I've now started a "foxey pocket" so hopefully I'll own one before I croak.

A really inthralling machine to me - the Piranha by Next Wave Automation.

It will take a while to pocket $1600, but it's possible.

I'll never be able to write code, but can use software from others.

I believe this tool can become a valuable addition in my woodworking shop by making extra shapes to parts of furniture that I'll make. Maybe could engrave names on little cars and maybe even pens.
