Stairway to Leaven!

One of my neighbors is a dude who is Very handy, and a Great baker..... Bread and pizaa are his forte.
He asked me to help him fashion a piece of an old stairway into a long handle for a "pizza peel", the tool he will use as he finishes his new oven a few months from now. So, I was honored to be the only guy he knows who has a lathe, a Shopsmith by golly! He figured we'd just round-down the square parts of the old piece he had. Here's what we worked up; he will next join the wood to a metal plate to get something like the Peels shown in the inset of this picture....

Nice handle, and I think everyone should be able to turn on carpeting.

First Shopsmith I ever saw was in a shopping mall vacant store front and I'm pretty sure it was on carpet! Just goes to show to be careful the example you set for others. (You DO know the story about cutting off the turkey's tail before roasting it, don't you?)

A girl was helping her mother prepare the holiday turkey. As the mother prepared to put the bird in the roasting pan, she whacked off the bird's tail. When the girl asked why, her mom replied, " That is the way my mother taught me." the girl persisted and they called the grandmother and asked her why. "That is the way MY mother taught me." They called the great-grand mother who by this time was quite elderly. When they posed the question to her, she laughed and laughed. "Do 't you remember?" she asked the grandmother. "The roasting pan we had when you were little was too small and the turkey wouldn't fit unless we trimmed off its tail!"
So be careful the example you set for others, such as parking the lathe on carpeting.
