Motor runs, looses power quickly

MK V, 1998.
Using the Joiner, only taking 1/16" of a dry 2x4 skinny side, the motor slows and seems to disengage while making a rattling noise. When I remove the wood, the motor speeds back up and gets quieter. Tried on various speed settings. Plugged into laundry outlet (40amp fuse), nothing else turned on. Joiner aligned with motor.

Haven't opened the motor housing yet, wanted to get some opinions. Ideas?

You did not say if this happens with any other tool or mode. If not then check the drive hubs on the head stock and jointer shafts for loose set screws.

If it happens in other modes I doubt it is the motor. Remove the belt cover and inspect for worn belts, worn parts, lack of lubrication etc.. A full head stock service should fix the problem.

Like John says, try the table saw (good load test) for a load test. You might be "slipping" the plastic coupler between the headstock and jointer.

That is the only thing I can think of .....

Apparently the lug nut on the lower power shaft had wiggled loose. A quick tightening with the Allen wrench and I'm back in business. Thanks guys for the feedback!

Ha ha--the guy I bought the scroll saw from this week kept asking if I wanted the ____________. I was so confused that I can't even remember what he called it anymore. He just kept looking around for it. Finally I figured out that he meant the coupler, and I waved him off because it was clear he was never going to find it and I didn't need to stand there all day. But it was a real "aha!" moment when I finally caught on to what he was looking for.

Anyway, Warrant--glad it's working for you now! As I mentioned in another post this week, the simplest solution is most often the correct one. It's certainly the correct one to check first, at any rate. Too many years of solving computer problems has taught me that.

I just remembered. He kept asking if I wanted the "clutch" for the scroll saw. Makes some sense, I guess, but at the time I wasn't immediately sure what he was talking about.
