I just found out about a shopsmith real recently. Since then I have been watching a butt load of Mr. Reid videos. I still think that I have a zillion or so of his videos to still watch. I almost bought a used Shop Smith 500 but now that I am learning more I am glad I waited. My question is What is the difference of a SS Mark 5 Model 520 and a Mark 7 (don't know enough yet if there is models on Mark7)?

There are both Mark 5 and Mark V.

There are both Mark 7 and Mark VII.

The early Mark 5 is essentially the same as a Mark V 500.

The early Mark VII is NOT the same as a the current Mark 7.

The Mark 5 was changed to Mark V with the introduction of the '510'.

The Mark V became a 500, 505 or 510 and eventually the 520.

The differences between the 5xx are the tables and rip fence.

The Mark 7 is a modified design of the 520 that adds dual tilt and under table routing and the power pro headstock.

All the models are 'upgradable' from the earliest Mark 5 all the way up.

The early Mark 5 were two tone green(Greenies) or two tone copper/brown/gold(Goldies aka Brownies).

The Greenies came in two varieties(Sand cast "A" headstock and die cast "B" headstock).

All Greenies and early Goldies were Gilmer drive.

Later Goldies and later gray models were Poly-V drive.

The "C" headstock moved the power switch and mounted it into a square hole and included a locking switch.

Well some of this is 'there'.

There have been different corporate entities that produced this product.

Magna Engineering, Magna Power Tool Corp., Yuba Power Products, Inc., Magna American Corp., Shopsmith Inc., and currently RLFBRANDS LLC.(reorganized from Shopsmith Inc.).

Terry, you have just received a lot of information and it is probably all correct, but your question; What is the difference of a SS Mark 5 Model 520 and a Mark 7? is, IMHO, better answered by reading the data in the link.

Buying new I agree Dusty.

But he appears to be looking at used stuff.

Straight direct answer, dual tilt and Power Pro Headstock.

You guys are all great and thanks for input. I read all the links to include the last list. As I am sure all of us are individuals and think differently. For instance I got most information and my starting basis from the last listing that gave me some exacts to look for. Then I took that and reread the links again now having a better idea of what to look for and thanks to all of your input I have idea of what I am doing. I say this as I am hoping even if someone else puts in correct answer you all will continue being this helpful for those of us that are different.

My purpose of this research knowing I would love to have a Shop Smith are cost/value to what I get. What I got for my purposes are that the Mark 5 model 520 and the Mark 7 are same except having double tilt and power pro enhanced headstock. From what I can tell the tables and fence are the same. A New Mark 7 says it is $4129 plus shipping assuming I don't find/wait for some promotion/code. A power pro motor new is $2120. That means if I was to buy used I would have to find a Mark 5 Model 520 that was still complete and sold for much less than $2009.00 to make it worth my time. Not sure about cost of the double tilt system which seems also automatically on Mark 7. What did I miss?

A 520 is not a Mark 5, it is a Mark V.

Oh and 'almost' This.
