Just a fun gift-turning for a party favor tonight. I also wanted to try out the Angelus shoe-polish that was one of the waxes tested by Fine Woodworking in a recent issue. Desert Ironwood from my scrap-pile:
Drilling through the scrap piece:
Rough-rounding on the bench:
A bit better rounding:
Polishing the final assembly:
Happy woodworking!

Shoe wax is an interesting idea. Anyone know what kind of wax they use in shoe wax ? Since it comes in so many colors it could offer some interesting possibilities.

I think they all have beeswax and carnauba wax mixes, and various types of solvents to help them go on, dry fast, and buff out.
Angelus is supposedly silicone-free, while some of the specialty Kiwi waxes may have silicones in them.
A few years ago, a salesman told me that the tints in Briwax were natural tints, while shoe-wax tints may have other sources.
But overall, waxes are fairly similar. I do like experimenting, though!

I was looking for a different sort of hardwood lately. I ended up buying a small slab of Milo wood from an e-seller in Hawaii. This turned out to be a handsome wood for a pen:

Happy woodworking! Happy New Year!
