New Guy question

I have just acquired a Shopsmith #262202 and jointer #11980. Both are in amazing condition for their age. The machine came with the original 9 inch blade and I was wondering if a 10 inch blade can be used with the existing 3/4 hp motor without any modifications. Also, any tips on what I should lube/change on it before I use it would be appreciated.

Hello,

We have videos on our academy page on how you should lubricate you Mark V. Swing on over to Shopsmith Academy's web site.

And, according to Jim McCann, our design engineer, he said the 10" blade should not be a problem, however, it depends on the saw guard and/or insert being "large" enough to accommodate the larger blade. If not, we can can not advise you to use the larger blade.

My '55 greenie came with a 9" blade attached to the arbor. My '57 Dewalt RAS uses 9" blades also. The sub-1 HP motors back then worked better with a smaller blade (more cutting force) and I think the engineers understood that when they spec'd blade diameter. I thought about getting a 9" blade for my SS when looking around for a new one, but settled on the standard 10" SS blade for my work. I may try a 9" if I can find one from a specialty house rather than the mass-market stores.

Go with a quality 10" thin kerf. I've a '54 Magna upgraded to a 520. A sharp thin kerf blade makes a world of difference even on my '99 520.

DO however, get the correct guard and dust collection system. Keep your eye on eBay. You may have to upgrade to a 505 setup first. Ask one of the very competent SS service reps,they'll know. You would appreciate the larger table size.

I found most of my upgrade parts on eBay. Reputable guys like Ruggs and JLewis can set you right should you decide to go "used".

Hang on to the old carriage and table if you upgrade.

So far no one has answered the question. Two people have said that they have 9" blades on their Shopsmith's and that is all.

If someone said they had 7" blades.....well?

I have a bunch of old Shopsmith catalogs and none of them list 9" inch blades. NOW, admittedly, I don't have a catalog that dates back to when a Mark V 500 was the only 5in1 tool to have.

No catalog....but when my '54 got dumped here...there was a 9" blade (rusty as could be) with it.

I was inferring 9" from Drew's post and the reference to Jim McCann's statement. Pluss the two - now three 9 inchers.

i bought a '56 model 500 that also came with 5 used 9 inch blades. my son has it now near chicago. will be there this weekend and will check if 10 inch blades will fit without any modification. i believe they will as i never see different size inserts for them except for the dado, molder and shaper/sander inserts. got to cut an access hole and drill the sheaves so that it can be maintained better/easier.
