Miter angles & Lengths.
I'm using Nicks suggestions of adding two diagonal braces, spaces in the picnic table top and brass screws. Other than trial and error, how can one figure what is needed. As far as the length of the brace and the needed angles? Right now through trial and error, the brace at the seat cross member is 42° and 45° at the underside of the table top. Brass screws are not cheap.

SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

I would have the ends of the braces meet at the middle of the table. Put put 2x2 cleats on both side of the braces underneath the table for additional stability. Screw the cleats to the table from underneath so the screws don't show on the table top, then screw the braces to the cleats.
You could also use galvanized or coated deck screws.

Odd. Since this brace is supposed to strengthen a right angle, shouldn't the angles involved add up to 90 degrees?

Well Nick, the reason is that I'm three states over from your location.
I did have some problem with the miter gage. The stop pin would only travel far enough to hit the body of the gage, not the adjustment screw. I took it apart and cleaned it up, but that didn't help. I found a burr in the stop pin hole. Removed that and all is fine now.
OOOOPPPSS I just remeasured and it is 44°/45°
