While finishing up an applewood bowl this week, I realized that this wooden tool rest might be of interest to some. In the absence of a reversing motor, it lets you do the finish scraping and sanding on the outboard side of the SS, which is a way of reversing the grain direction. This often helps in smoothing out stubborn end grain.

Great idea. That is a deep bowl .

I finished it with Watco Satin wax, which gave it a nice luster and let the wood really show through. I gave it to a friend who gave it to his wife for a bowl to hold a skein of yarn while she knits

did you have to remove the regular tool rest to get it close enough to the end?

Sorry to be answering so late...been busy, but now I'm back. The answer is that I swapped out the standard tool rest for the small "specialty" tool rests that Shopsmith offers. Worked great...I used the short straight one as well as the "S" curved one. Hope this is helpful.
