Blade arbor length

Post by Starnesw »

I am new and just purchased a used 510. When I try to set up the table saw, I have blade alignment problems. I have short arbors, but I have to slide it out about half an inch to get it to align with the blade knife on the guard. I have longer arbors, but they set the blade knife out too far and will not align either. What am I missing?

Starnesw,

Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum.

The Arbors in the attached pictures show different Arbors made over the years for the Shopsmith tools going back to 1947 for the Model 10E in the upper left of the first two pictures.

The first picture is the 5/8" Arbors. On the top row is P/N 555321 which is the shorter 5/8" Saw Blade Arbor for the Mark V 500. Next to it is P/N 555118 which was later replaced by 555608 as the 5/8" Saw Blade Arbor for the Mark V 510/505, 520 and Mark 7. It is 555118 or 555608, the longer Arbors, that you need to use with 5/8" Arbor hole Saw Blades for the Mark V 510/505, 520 and Mark 7.

The second picture is the 1/2" and 1-1/4" Arbors with a specialty Arbor in the lower right corner for the Biscuit Jointer. For the Mark V 510/505, 520 and Mark 7 you need the longer Arbor P/N 555130 for 1-1/4" Arbor hole Saw Blades.

There is a 1-1/4" Saw Blade Arbor P/N 555572 that looks like the current 5/8" Saw Blade Arbor P/N 555608 that is in the 3rd picture. Those were both originally for the SawSmith Table Saw and only the 5/8" Arbor carried over for use on the Marks and is the current one. Just be aware that if you are buying a used 555608 Arbor (on the left) with the recessed center that it is not the 1-1/4" version 555572 (on the right) with the raised center.

If you are using one of the longer Arbors mentioned above and it is not aligning the Saw Blade to the Splitter of the upper Saw Blade Guard there is an adjustment screw, as indicated by the arrow in the picture below, that can be turned in or out as needed to adjust that alignment.

It’s not the minor adjustment on the guard. This would have to be the wrong arbor(s). It looks like the 555118 sits the blade closer to the head unit, which is what I need. I will order the 555608 and try that one.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate it.

Arbors 555118 and 555608 put the Saw Blade at the same distance away from the Quill end. Arbor 555321 for the Mark V 500 original Table System is the same design as the 555118 only shorter and uses the same nut. Unless there is some other issue 555608 will work when using 5/8" arbor hole Saw Blades. It is what I use on my Mark 7 and Mark V 520. A little more history, originally 505506 the 5/8" Universal Arbor later known as the Molder/Dado Arbor and previous Arbors 126-1X, 12 031 & 22 031 were used for 5/8" arbor hole Saw Blades. Arbor 12431 was the 5/8" Saw Blade Arbor for the Mark 2 and the first one specifically made for Saw Blade use only.

Near the end of the quill is a knurled aluminum knob, it is part of the design of the bearing seat. This could be positioned improperly on the spindle or of the wrong version for the quill and would throw off blade positioning. It's outboard face that the arbor seats against should be very close to 9/16" from the outboard end of the quill barrel, where your lower guard mounts. I believe that measurement would be accurate for all quill variants. My thinking is that your longer arbors are correct. Posting pictures of your hardware may help to narrow down the problem.

I just upgraded to the Power Pro 2. Plus I have three standard head units. It’s the same with all of them. If I can figure out how to post pictures, I will add them.

Are you, perchance, missing the rubber ring between the headstock and carriage? Usually on the rear way tube, it provides proper spacing between the carriage and headstock.

Will,

Since you have the same problem with 4 different Headstocks, I would suspect the Arbor is the problem being the common part in all 4 cases. Do you know if the Arbor is an actual OEM one from Shopsmith or was bought on the internet from another site possibly made by another manufacturer?

One other thought I have on the Saw Blade not aligning to the Splitter of the Upper Saw Blade Guard is possibly a mounting issue to the Lower Saw Guard. Check your manual for the correct parts and installation. If you do not have the manual for your Mark V 510 you can get the same Saw Blade Guard information by downloading, for free, the PDF of the Mark V 520S Manual from here on the Shopsmith website under Learn then Manuals & Information. In that manual the parts information is on page B-11 and the installation & alignment starts on page B-33.

As for posting pictures see the topic How to Post a Picture near the top of the Community section. Posting pictures has changed over the years so some of the more current instructions are in later posts.

I have a NIB 555608 510 and on 5/8" arbor, so I can be sure it came from the OEM. It measures 1.697" from the surface that registers against the knurled knob of the main spindle to the raised portion that registers against the left side of the body of the blade. From this one can derive a nominal plane where a 510 and on blade and riving knife ought to both be.

The center of the blade and center of riving knife distance varies, this is why the saw guard is adjustable. Blade body thickness varies with kerf width and blade model. And while 5/8" arbor blades register off their left side, 1-1/4" arbor blades register off their right. With a small sample set, I came up with 1.74" as an average from the registration surface on the knurled knob to the center of the cut plane. I wouldn't disagree if someone said the nominal was slightly higher, as thin kerf blades are relatively new and 510's are relatively old. I suspect the correct nominal answer is 1-3/4".

Above does not apply to Model 500 and earlier.
