Paint

Post by Hobbyman2 »

I suppose this has been asked several times , it turns out the greeny I thought was a goldy is once again a actual greeny , once I got the covers off some actual original paint was exposed . I hate to repaint the thing because of the patina , its almost like erasing its past . that said I want to make it good for the future , a couple new belts and a good lube and cleaning is under way , is there a source for the hammerd paint ? Rustoleum no longer makes the verde green hammered paint. Sorta like JPW. I go not know of an alternative.

Hobbyman2,

Do you have the serial number for your Mark 5? That could tell when it was made. Of course, after all these years there could have been some switching of parts/assemblies between tools leaving only the Headstock with the original date of manufacture. The only thing that gives a Mark 5 its serial number is that Vent/Serial Number Plate (sticker on later Mark V's) on the Belt Cover. Even that could be taken from a different Mark 5.

I have been looking for an alternative paint to match the Hammered Finish Green of the Mark 5 "Greenies" since the Verde Green Rustoleum paint was discontinued. Although Verde Green looks good it was not even that close to a match to the original green. I currently have a Mark 5, a Mark 2, a Jig Saw, a Bandsaw and the 1950's Air Compressors waiting to be restored and needing paint. I may try a green color with a Hammered Finish clear coat paint to see how that comes out.

There is a similar problem restoring Goldies as the Rustoleum Hammered Finish Oatmeal color paint has also been discontinued. The Oatmeal color was a better match, and in my opinion near perfect, than the Rustoleum Hammered Finish Gold color paint. More tools awaiting restoration include these Goldies, a Mark V, a Belt Sander and 2 Bandsaws. I've got a lot of work ahead if I find the right paint.

I asked the question about paint match colors in some on the Q&A you tube videos with Andrew.

He was busy at the time and had bigger issues bringing this company back to life.

I hope he would consider the paint colors.

The Gray and Green and Gold would be a big seller if he would consider spending the time to match and produce those.

I was considering just taking the head stock off and building a rolling cabinet for storage for spt's , blades and bits ,, , I havent had a good project in a while . Im not sure the value on a restored mkv like this one is worth the money or not . On the other hand it sounds like a fun project what ever way I go . I had no idea it was that old when I picked it up . Thanks every one !!

There isnt too many places around where you can get parts for some of the older ''''{dependable eq} ''' parts . maybe we will end up like Cuba ? it would be nice to see some one with the courage to reproduce parts for older eq even in small quantities . jmo I think there is a parts market for quality older eq that can be less expensive Chinese goods . I could be wrong .

Hobbyman2,

If it is a Greenie they were made from before the introduction of the Mark 5 in March 1954 until February or March of 1960. There are some things specific to the Greenies as changes were made. The first is the Headstock casting itself. The "A" Headstock was made until October 1955 when the "B" Headstock was introduced. The first telltale sign a Greenie Headstock is the "A" Headstock is the High-Speed Lock seen below. It's that little metal tab held on by the Switch that must be pushed in to go into the higher speed range.

.
Other outward signs of the age of a Greenie Headstock is how many screws were used to hold on the Belt Cover. The first Headstocks had 8 screw that change to 6 screws in 1955 before the change to the "B" Headstock. In 1957 it changed to 2 screws to hold the Belt Cover on the Headstock. In the picture below of a "B" Headstock the red circles show the locations for the 6 screw which includes the bottom and back side. The black circle indicates the additional 7th and 8th screw's locations early "A" Headstocks. The Black arrow is where the 2 screws are located to hold the Belt Cover on beginning sometime in 1957. (I know I am making this pretty basic but others less familiar with Shopsmith Mark V's may find it helpful.)

Another big difference the Greenie's had were the Bench Tubes being 1-7/8” diameter going to 1-3/4” diameter for the Goldie's. I am not sure how many Goldie's may have been made with 1-7/8" diameter Bench Tubes or if any of the last Greenie's had the 1-3/4" Bench Tubes. It is these 1-7/8" Bench Tubes that warnings in upgrades about pre 1972 Mark V's require additional changes come from.

A couple of changes occurred to the Main Table during the Greenie era. The first in 1957 was the Fence Rail became a separate part bolted onto the Main Table. Up to that time the Fence Rail was a part of the Main Table casting. In 1959 the extra slot was added to the Main Table which was a feature of the Mark 2.

These easy to see differences can help determine an age range for the Mark 5 Greenies. There are additional internal Headstock differences that can narrow down the age of a Mark 5 Greenie.

All this is true only if the parts are all original to when a specific Greenie was made.

As for getting parts for the Mark 5 Greenie's, they can be found but original ones to match may take patience. The Greenie Headstock shown above is from one I restored that took me a while to find all the correct parts I needed to get it back to original condition. One thing that can save these older Mark 5's is upgrading with more current parts. As an example, I have even seen where a Power Pro motor has been added to a Greenie.

I hope to get a few CNC machines going and reproduce some parts for machines in this status.

I have an old CNC mill that I am in the process of retrofitting.

I hope to make stuff like the cam that goes bad on the Old Mark 7 that was made in the 60's.
