OK, as I said in previous posts, I got my frankensmith used and with all kinds of accessories. Today I am asking about sanding disks. I have 3 different ones, an aluminum 10" and 2 steel 12". The shaft / base of the 12" are different lengths. Can someone please explain the difference? Thanks!

As far as I know the recent Shopsmith disks are all 12". You can buy a 10" sanding disk as an accessory for any 10" table saw, so that may be what you have. There are two types of Shopsmith 12" disks: regular & conical. The conical has a lipped edge and a longer shaft/base. The conical take special paper, and it is used for jointing and sharpening. If you look carefully you will see that its surface is not flat, but falls away at 4 degrees.

The short shaft is for use on the Mark V. The long shaft is for use on the Model 510 and 520.

If you use the short shaft on the Shopsmith Models 510 or 520, you'll have interference problems when using the lower guard.

The sanding disks are made to go with models of shopsmiths. The shorter one is for the 500 and the longer for the 505/510/520. I had to buy several of the hubs to update my 500 disks to 520's.

Thanks guys, this should help me figure out what size fits. 500 or the 510/520 items.

The steel short hub is for the Mark5, Mark V (500).

The steel longer hub is for the Mark V 505/510/520.

The aluminum hubs are slightly(3/16") shorter than the short steel ones.

The aluminum ones were made for the Model 10E/R and Mark 5 (Greernies and Goldies and Later Magna Americal gray ones). The model 10 version has a 3/8x16 setscrew with a 3/16" allen socket. The later (Greenies and Goldies and Gray Magna American mark 5) versions have a 5/16-18 set screw with a 5/32" allen socket. (allen = hex)

The steel ones are those produced by SS Inc.

The Mark VII originally came with a disk that was flat on one side and conical on the other side. I am not sure of the diameter(FARMER????). I believe the angle of the conical side was different from the current conical one.

The conical disk is a steel disk produced by SS Inc. in two versions(500/510...) and has a 3-4 degree taper( 3+ degrees measured and 4 degrees claimed by SS).

Probably more than you bargained for, but ya did say for future purchases! You find many aluminum ones on Ebay.


Shopsmith Inc. is the current producer of Mark Vs.

Magna American was its predecessor(the list is longer).

I can't see it from here but I think my 10-ER has a 10" sanding disk. I have maybe 10 sanding disk and they are not all alike. Maybe 5 different disk going by minor variations. I probably have more aluminum disk than steel. I didn't get a disk with any of the Mark VII's so I don't know about it.

I checked the ssug site and they have a couple of Mark VII things you might find interesting.

Parts manual might be useful even if you can't order parts at least you can see where they all go and that might be useful.

The brochure looked interesting to me as well even if I don't own one of these machines.

Farmer was on to it, the 10ER had a 10" Alum sanding disk available. I have picked up several with the ER's and the Catalog for the ERs showed a 10" sanding disk available.

The mkVII brochure states a 10" flat/conical sanding disk.

P.S. A 9" sanding disk was available for the sawsmith
