Hello fellow smithers,

Just acquired a Shopsmith from a friend who has MS. He doesn't remember when he purchased it and I think from viewing pictures, it is a Mark V 500. Anyway, the spindle is 5/8" and the one saw blade that I have is 1 1/4" bore. I am wondering if a 5/8" arbor will fit the head spindle so I can use 5/8" bore blades. Thanks for your thoughts and informaition.

Welcome to these forums! The 5/8" arborfor the model 500 is still available from SS. Any 10" or smaller blade with a 5/8" bore will fit this arbor and thus the Mark V 500. Be sure to get the right arbor. This is the one for the 505/510/520 that fit blades with a 5/8" bore.

Welcome to the forum. You have found the source for almost anything you may need answered about your machine and how to use it.

There are special saw arbors that are designed for the 1-1/4" bore blades. The arbors are different for the 500 than the other current models.

You would want part 505511 for the model 500.

If you also have saw blades that have 5/8" bores, there is a separate arbor you can get to mount those. That is part number 555321 on the same page.

Why don't you update your profile information to show where you are located at. A true swampgator may not be far from where I am located.

I had seen both units on the website and that was what raised the question. Also, 1 1/4" bore blades are very limiting. When I can go to the big box store and bring home a normal bore blade is what I am looking for. Now, I'll go shopping on ebay to find the correct arbors. I am planning to build an array of blades with the arbors installed so I can make quick changes.

From your comments, I understand that the arbors for the 505/510/520, the spindle on the motor spindle is threaded. Am I correct? What I have is the unthreaded one with a reverse taper.

I greatly appreciate your immediate posts and your knowledge sharing. Thanks.

No, that is knot correct: All arbors are "plain shank", i.e., no threads. The difference is the table system. The 500 table requires a shallower arbor and the 505/510/520 requires a longer arbor. The headstock spindle on ALL the Mark V's are the same.

BTW, any good saw shop can enlarge the bore on your blades. The 1 1/4" arbors help "stiffen" the blades.

Thanks, Tim, for clarifying that for me. Reading the manual for the machine and looking at pictures only gives part of the story. If you want to know, ask someone who has spent time learning all this. That's why I had to join this forum to learn from the experts. Thank you so much. For now, I'll proceed with correcting my saw blades as I have several and an equal number of the larger arbors. I think I'll stick to the larger ones and get all the ones that I purchase from the box stores changed to fit my arbors rather than finding arbors to match their blades.

The spindle on all shopsmiths is a plain(straight) 5/8" shaft with a tapered flat. ALL items attached to the spindle shaft are retained with a setscrew with a smooth end(not cupper or serated). The 500 arbors are shorter than the 505/510/520 arbors. Saw arbors are either 5/8" or 1 3/4". The 1 3/4 is a shopsmith 'feature' for saw blades of this size. Verify the part no of any arbor purchased on e-bay.

All references to 1 3/4" above should be 1 1/4" :>(

My arbors are 1 1/4", knot 1 3/4". Does anybody besides Red have 1 3/4" arbors???

Thanks, JPG. That's a great clarity between the various models. That also helps me to know what I have and I can tell the difference in the pictures. Will be sticking with the 1 1/4" arbors for now. Have a saw shop nearby who can do the bore modification when I get them sharpened and set provided they are not carbide tipped. Will check on all that with the saw shop. Thanks for your help.
