It has been a while since we have done a project on the forum. I have several cased openings with arched raised panels to do for a builder. The thought occurred to me that it would be a great show and tell project. The first step is to make a nice sketchup drawing.

I think we will do a 32 inch on the forum as it should photograph better. I have figured the radius for each. The formula for doing so is simple math. You take the width (32") and square it. 32 x 32 = 1024. You then multiply it by .125. 1024 x .125 = 128. You then divide by the height. In this case we are 81 inches to the center or crown of the arch and 77.5 on the sides where the arch starts. 81 - 77.5 = 3.5. So 128 divided by 3.5 = 36.5714. We then add back one half the height or 1.75. 36.5714 + 1.75 = 38.3214 rounded off to 38 5/16. radius = width squared x .125 divided by rise + 1/2 of rise.

I just wish I could figure out how to use sketchup. I tried the tutorials, but I stll can not get it....

Mike have you tried Toms lessons from sketchup 101? He is a great teacher and breaks it down into easy steps.

This is Shelly. She has decided she is to old for the snow and ice we got last night and would just as soon stay in the shop. Of course 30 minutes later she was not to old to be running up and down the fence barking at the neighbor hood kids out playing on their 4 wheelers. I guess we all need a little incentive.

Since I do not have a 4 x 8 printer we need to make a full size template of the header on 1/4 inch plywood.

With a center line and a pivot point established I clamp my 1/4 inch template in place and begin the layout.

This little center rail shaped like a key is going to be fun.

With the template marked out and checked for accuracy I will use it to lay out the actual parts.

The first step is to make a clamping jig for the radius part of the 4 1/2 inch jamb. I will need two pieces this size from 3/4 inch plywood. The ruler is only being used as a spacer.

I have set up some equipment for this project.

Notice that I have screwed both pieces together. I will first cut them out on the band saw and then sand down to the line on the belt sander.

Tip of the day. Don't let your vac hose make contact with the spinning hub driving your band saw. Now where did I put that duct tape?:D

I can't recall where we bought it but we used to buy large sized heat shrink tubing for repairing vac hoses. It was available in black or white.
