A Three Hour Tour...

(with apologies to bad sitcoms everywhere)

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale
a tale you might relate with,
that started from a trip to Craig's list,
and came home with a Shopsmith.

The budget started getting rough,
the tiny budget was tossed.
If not for the courage of the Mastercard crew
the Shopsmith would be lost.
The Shopsmith would be lost.

....

Well, my Shopsmith had its maiden voyage today.
After weeks of ebay, Craig's list, generous forum members, and Shopsmith email specials, my Mark V is finally equipped with needed parts, blades, and safety gear. Over the last few days I've been aligning and adjusting my fool heart out, until this afternoon I was finally satisfied that all was in order.

I woke my stepson early (before 3 in the afternoon) and took him out to introduce him to the world of safe woodworking. (Failing that, we could sure use 1.5 million.) I had some baseboard trim that needed cutting, and the machine was a dream to use. After demonstrating a few cuts I had stepson donn safety glasses and he used a table saw for the first time in his life.

Today was a modest task, but as they say, every voyage starts with a single step.

EDIT: Corrected time thanks to heads-up by horologist

Paul,

My grandfather tried the same approach to introduce me the the world of golf. Needless to say I'm not a golfer. :D

Cheers.

Paul,

That makes a lot more sense. It is bad enough getting up at 3:30 or 4 am to go to work. If I had to get up at 3am to do woodworking my nickname would probably be "lefty" before long...

Some of my greatest memories come from the time I got to spend with my father at the belt factory, and checking tubes in the TV, or soldering a circuit board. Not sure what my children will hold dear. I try to make projects with the grandkids whenever I can. Bird houses, signs, whatever.
I congratulate you for taking the time to create memories with your "son".

My middle son is a musician. We have built an assortment of custom amp cases and other cases to transport his equipment. He has no real interest in woodworking but I encourage him to help with the project. He has gotten pretty good with tools and the cases are more important to him as a result.

Your next together project should be a Telecaster style guitar. Check out the Hompe Depot section of TDPRI.com, and you'll be building guitars very soon. I'm hooked on it. That's why I did get a used Shopsmith. I saw how a few builders were modding theirs, and making high quality guitars, not just t-style. I am very anxious to get this up and running. Check out the link, and then search for a special project I've contibuted to, also.
