Greetings,

I thought I'd mention the wood I just used to make a bathroom shelf. This is Red Elm which is only occasionally seen here in the Midwest furnishings. It can have some very beautiful pronounced grain. In this particular case it's stained fairly dark to go with the room decor.

It's also a nice "shelf" wood because it's fairly lightweight and strong. This one has 2 edge keyhole interfaces with the wall, and a couple of small brackets underneath. Using ideas from a recent magazine article, I made the shelf project out 91 degrees from the wall underneath, so things don't roll off of it.

So where did you find the Elm?

I have been to northwest lumber a few times and they had a nice selection. The prices were ok. And since the woodcraft store in Merrillville closed they are about an hour drive for me.

Thanks! -- This time it was neither Northwest nor Rockler nor Woodcraft -- even though I like all those stores around here.

I had got the 'bug' specifically for Red Elm based on a showroom piece in Brown County, IN. I was able to find a few boards on eBay (from an Illinois mill if I recall). Anyway, finally got around to using one after it sat half a year here.
