Yesterday I replaced the blade on my bandsaw (newer model with the aluminum table). I acquired this a few months ago, second hand, and the blade was pretty shot when I got it.

Since this was the first time changing the blade, I got out the manual to make sure I did it right. One of the steps is to remove a bolt and nut at the front of the table (where the table splits to let the blade pass through while changing blades). Well, to my surprise the bolt and nut is missing from mine.

My questions are:

1. What's the purpose of this bolt and nut?
2. Is it safe to operate the bandsaw without the bolt/nut installed (I've been using it and haven't noticed a problem yet, but I may be an accident waiting to happen)?
3. Anybody know what size bolt/nut is needed?

It aligns the table where the blade slot is. It is a carriage bolt and knurled nut item # 503782 and 126315. I think it is either a 1/4 or 5/16 standard carriage bolt and a regular wing nut with washer would work.

Thanks, Mark, for the response. I hadn't noticed the table was out of alignment but I will definitely check that and probably head down to the hardware store and pick up a couple of bolts/wing nuts.

Using the bandsaw without that bolt and nut will not cause any unsafe condition, - except for one.

This has happened to me - - The two halves of the table became just a little uneven. The piece I was sawing got snagged on the right half of the table when sawing a curve. The snag was a bit troublesome because the wood wouldn't move freely around the curve. If I had been a bit more anxious, I should have simply pushed harder and slipped my thumb into the moving blade.

I immediately dug the bolt and nut out of a drawer and fastened it on the table. With a tight bolt & nut, it took an hour or so for the table to re-align.

Incidentally, the nut is a solid round nut with flat bottom, that has been knurled for hand tightening. It is a good part and we all should have one. Not being too expensive, I suggest ordering one along with your next larger order from Shopsmith.
