Hi all, I'm another new to shopsmithdom. A friend gave me a set of
Shopsmith lathe tools because I do carving and talked about wanting to get a lathe. So I go online to find info and come across an add at a pawn shop 5 minutes from the job we're working. They pull out an older machine with the headstock motor, tablesaw base, and a bandsaw. It runs O.K. and the saw turns freely so I got it for $90.00. The serial # is gone but the bandsaw has one ( 53206) maybe 1981?
Is this a 500 or 510? it's grey with a metal toggle switch.

I know very little about lathes but looks like I need a tail stock and center pin
along with the part for the headstock shaft.
All 3 shafts are 5/8
I done want new parts so where can I find these items at a fair price?
Any info will be appreciated.

the headstock and main carriage are largely interchangable, so the main hting is the table system. at $90 my guess is a 500.

500 has a small table with a lip. raising the table happens via a long handle.
510 has larger table with a red insert for the blade and round tubes. raising the table uses a hand crank
520 has larger table with red insert for blade and boxy aluminum tubes. raising the table uses the hand crank

B4 you get too far with it, here is some recommended reading - https://forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=7092&highlight=newowner

The tail stock, tailstock center, and the spur drives are often found on e-bay, but with shipping can become more costly than new from SS. Caveat Emptor. B4 running it much, do the lubrication bit. You know nothing re its history!

P.S. You are also missing a couple of handles/lever(the quill feed and the table elevation). They come in three different versions, stubby red, skinny red, skinny black. The shiney ventplate on the pto end(facing the bandsaw) should have either a SN or a MFG date.

P.P.S. Do you also need the lathe tool rest??

I need the tool rest also.
I fabricated a coupling to connect the bandsaw using a 3 inch nipple and set screws but I'm gonna have to weld nuts on to catch enough threads.
I'm going to the local flea market on Sat. to look for more parts before I e-bay. Probable end up fabricating a tail stock if I can't find a good deal.
Turning is'nt a big deal yet, just having a bandsaw is great for the moment.
Gotta take a black cherry and a black walnut log to my friends mill tomorrow
Orders are piling up.

Be very cautious using a rigid coupling that does not 'give' for slight mis-alignment. That would be placing the castings and bearings at risk.(as well as the operator) Replacing the lower bandsaw bearing is very pricey.

Rather than make something that may fail or not be safe, I would just buy a couple of these. I keep a couple of backups on hand in case one should fatique, but that has not happened.

NINETY BUCKS including the BANDSAW. I think I'm gonna throw up. And then there are you guys out there that have them given to you! Here in the vacuum I live in you rarely even see one for sale, and then they want both arms and a leg for an incomplete old machine. Except for that one time when I was five minutes late to a garage sale for a 510 with jointer and more for $400. I wanted to cry.
Yeah I'm just whining. I'm glad someone out there gets a good deal and if it brings another newbie into the SS fold, then it's all good.

Not to pour salt in your wounds but I just picked up a 500 with many accessories I didn't have including a DC3300 for $140 total. The deals are out there you just have to keep your eyes open and be willing to go and get em' when they do surface. This one actually came my way from another SS user who had bought the jigsaw from the guy and told me about the rest of the stuff.
