Yes, it seems strange but Shopsmith did have a wooden mallet kit (PN 521947) which I bought more than a few years ago. It popped up out of the storage drawer today and I thought 'Gee, I should build this'. The kit has two dowels and 1 piece of 3 x 1 (15" long) and I do have the plans for it.

So what is my problem, you might ask. Glad you asked -I was just wondering if anyone has built this little item. The mallets head is made up of a sandwich of 3 pieces of the 3x1 (each about 4-1/2" long). There are several construction variations shown and one uses 3/4" dowels pinned through the head for reinforcement. I have been debating on how to assemble that variation. Simple enough to just go ahead and make it happen but I thought maybe someone knows what the h*** I am talking about and maybe even built one.

So how many more of us purchased that little jewel and have never built it. Oddly enough mine made an appearance in my consciousness just yesterday. Yes thought about building it and returned it to the "perhaps someday" box. The reason is simple. Shortly after purchasing the kit my wife and I assisted a friend with an estate sale. The person we assisted kindly gifted me several rather interesting hand tools for my efforts. That collection included three different mallets. Thus I have seen no need for another. Fjimp

For those that have this kit and not built it. They are terrible, and should be sent to me for disposal.

Well, it looks like I am going to go ahead and build it. I'm seriously considering one change - make the handle go all the way through the mallet head and then secure the handle with a wedge driven in. I do plan on using the 3/4" dowels through holes in the head (one of the options shown on the prints). I plan on gluing the head together before before I drill the holes and drive in the 3/4" dowels.

Actually I have another idea for another version but that will have to wait.

I built on and here it is. Of course it has been uded alot. If I recall correctly I just drilled the holes with a forstner bit and a backer board to help on the chip out. Also added a picture of my new toy.

I think I missed the mallet in the pictures......... I just kept seeing motorcycle.

I just had to do it last month. Goes with my made in America theme of hobbies. Now the struggle of using the shop or the bike. Of course winter is setting in here so I suppose the shop will get a little more action than the bike. I just can't seem to start on winterizing it yet.

I have been considering making a mallet.

I was about to ask what is the proper angle for the mallet head face, but I googled it and found this.

I think I will put the 'wrist' angle on one face and the 'elbow' angle on the opposite face.
